In two weeks, the 13th annual Great Days of Service will take on over 320 projects with use of 80,000 volunteers in Gwinnett County. The scope of this event alone is impressive, but did you know that we have also inspired a community halfway around the world?

A couple of years ago, Suzy Bus, the Director of the Gwinnett Helpline at the Gwinnett Coalition, was working with James, a regular volunteer and US citizen who emigrated from Nigeria. James had been fascinated with the support that Great Days of Service and the Gwinnett Coalition provided back to the community and was a regular volunteer at the Gwinnett Coalition’s Helpline. He also made an annual trip to his village in Nigeria to deliver bicycles that he collected through the year so that residents of the community had a mode of transportation to get to work.

On this particular day, Suzy and James were cleaning out one of the store rooms and came across leftover t-shirts from a previous year’s Great Days of Service. James asked Suzy, if they did not need the t-shirts, could he deliver the outdated shirts with the bikes on his next trip to Nigeria. They were just taking up space, so Suzy sent the shirts with him.

A few months passed and Suzy had not thought much about the trip or James until he stopped by to see her and share with her the impact of this small gesture. Suzy recalls, “I won’t forget when James found me when he came back from his trip. He thanked me again for the shirts, but then he shared a little story with me. He said that the villagers asked what Great Days of Service and the Gwinnett Coalition were. He of course told them, but they kept asking him about it the whole time he was there. The villagers in Nigeria were so inspired by the idea, that they have since set up their own coalition to support their community. And to top it off, the leaders of their coalition are required to wear a uniform, the donated Great Days of Service t-shirts.

I just could not believe that such a small action could have such a big, positive impact on a place so far away. This is why we do what we do.”

“We don’t do any of this for notoriety, we do this to make the world we live in a better place” says Amanda Sutt, Great Days of Service executive committee member. “And you never know how far a small gesture will reach until you see the smile on the face of someone where you have instilled hope when it was all but lost.”

There is still time to sign up to be a part of this year’s Great Days of Service. You can sign up online and follow us on Facebook to keep up with projects. The last day to sign up to volunteer is Friday, September 28th.

Last year, 80,000 volunteers for Gwinnett Great Days of Service completed over 310 community projects including staffing community events, painting and repairing buildings, installing playground sets, and cleaning up nature trails. We have 323 projects listed with Great Days of Service, plus an additional 110 projects through 12 Stone’s Compassion in Action, making this year’s Great Days of Service the biggest ever with 432 projects! The event is hosted by the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services in partnership with United Way of North Metro Atlanta.

The Gwinnett Great Days of Service is sponsored by: Primerica, United Way of Metro Atlanta, Arthur A Buck Jones Nursery, Nordson, Gwinnett Medical Center, Community Foundation of Northeast Georgia, Gem Shopping Network, FIS Global, Hands On Atlanta, Wells Fargo, Hayes James Engineering, Andersen, Tate & Carr, Myers Group, GCPS Foundation, The Atlanta Community Tool Bank, Gwinnett Braves and Do Good Rewards.
On October 5th and 6th, something close to 80,000 Gwinnett citizens donate their support to local charities, non-profits, schools, churches, organizations and more for this two day event. Do you belong to a charity, non-profit, school, church, organization or other that is in need of a new coat of paint, landscaping, cleaning or just about anything else? If this is you, what are you waiting for?

Go to GwinnettGreatDaysOfService.org and click on the Projects and Volunteer tab to download the application. We even have a list of ideas if you can’t quite figure out what you want to do. So far, we have more than 140 projects lined up for this year, making it one of the biggest years ever. We are looking for projects that can take anywhere from 3 to 150 volunteers, so get creative. If you are still stuck, the lovely Ms. Suzy Bus (770-995-3339) will work with you to finalize the details.

Gwinnett Great Days of Service is the single largest two day public service annual event in Gwinnett County, and one of the largest in the United States. Last year, over 95,000 volunteers combined efforts to complete approximately 500 projects.

The Foster Children’s Foundation, well known in the state for their service to 1200 children each year in Gwinnett County, began as a Great Days of Service project back in 2003.

“Gwinnett Great Days of Service has given us the ability to change the lives of local children in need,” said Suzanne Geske, executive director of the Foster Children’s Foundation. “Volunteering is critical to our community and families,” she said. “There is nothing greater than to raise our children with the desire to reach out and help others in need.”

Projects are being identified across Gwinnett County to be completed later this fall. Whether you have served in the past, or are just learning about Great Days of Service, come to the kick- off to get connected to this year’s event.

From 5:00 – 6:15pm, volunteers are able to pick up a GDOS bracelet and team information in front of the stadium. Participants are invited to attend the Gwinnett Braves game against the Norfolk Tides for a special ticket price of only $5. For ticket information or to learn how to get involved, visit: www.gwinnettgreatdaysofservice.org or www.facebook.com/gwinnettgdos.

The Gwinnett Great Days of Service is sponsored by: United Way, Primerica, FIS Global, Atlanta Hawks/Phillips Arena, Gwinnett Medical Center, Arthur A Buck Jones, Hands on Atlanta and the Atlanta Community Tool Bank.

The Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services is planning its twelfth annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service scheduled for Friday, September 30 and Saturday October 1, 2011. This event engages thousands of volunteers in a day of community service projects all around Gwinnett. Last year we had over 95,000 volunteers, including large corporations, schools, small businesses, individuals, church groups, and families, completing service projects which made it one of the largest volunteer initiatives in the country!

We partner volunteers with local agencies to work side-by-side to make a difference in the community and to learn from each other. The Great Days of Service address specific needs in the county through volunteers who complete much-needed service projects for local non-profits and schools. These projects build community while educating citizens and leaders about the needs around them.

This event could not happen without the support of the volunteers in our community. We have hundreds of family friendly service projects available throughout Gwinnett County. You can chose to help your favorite agency or school or pick a project based on an activity you enjoy. Projects include, but are not limited to, landscaping, painting, and light construction. As Harriet Naylor once said, “Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one’s ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.”

Getting involved with Gwinnett’s Great Days of Service is easy! If you have any questions or want to sign up to participate in the largest volunteer event of the year, visit our website www.gwinnettgreatdaysofservice.org

Somewhere on this planet, someone has a solution to each of the world’s problems. It might be one of us. With your help, we can build a more hopeful world.

The Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services, in partnership with the United Way of
North Metro, is proud to present the 12th annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service on Friday,
September 30 and Saturday October 1, 2011. This event engages thousands of volunteers in a day
of community service throughout Gwinnett County. Last year, over 95,000 volunteers participated,
including individuals from large corporations, schools, small businesses, church groups, and families, and
amazingly completed over 500 community service projects, making it one of the largest volunteer
initiatives in the country.

“United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta in Gwinnett is excited to partner with the Gwinnett Coalition
for Health and Human Services for Gwinnett Great Days of Service. Volunteerism is a central
theme to the work of United Way in our collective community efforts to help families and
individuals thrive while also working collaboratively with the organizations that provide the on-
ground support. We’re looking forward to plenty of quality volunteer service projects this year”
says Demetrius Jordan, regional director of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta.

Gwinnett Great Days of Service addresses specific needs in Gwinnett County by providing volunteers
to complete much-needed service projects for local non-profits, schools, and churches. These
collaborative projects build community while educating people from our community of the critical needs
around them and in their own backyards.

This event could not happen without the support of the community!

Please consider volunteering for this very worthy and fun cause. There are several ways for you, your
family and friends, and your co-workers to get involved:

Sponsor a volunteer team from your business to complete a service project in the community i.e. landscaping, painting, light construction, etc.

Conduct a food, toy, or school supply drive at your business for a local agency or school.

Be a Gwinnett Great Days of Service Sponsor.

If you have any questions or want to register to participate in the largest volunteer event of the year,

Lawrenceville, GA (13 September 2011) –Volunteers are needed for the 12th Annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service, which will be held on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1, 2011. The annual event offers Gwinnett residents the opportunity to donate their time and energy to doing community service and helping those in need. Last year’s volunteers for Gwinnett Great Days of Service completed over 500 community projects. The event is hosted by the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services in partnership with United Way of North Metro.

One of the largest volunteer initiatives in the United States, Gwinnett Great Days of Service enables local non-profit organizations, schools and churches to enhance their services in the community. According to Brent Bohanan, Executive Director of Family Promise of Gwinnett County, Inc., an organization that mobilizes the community to help the homeless, “The Great Days of Service have provided much needed services for free which allows us to focus our resources on ending homelessness in Gwinnett County.”

Lynnette Ward , Community Resource Director for Rainbow Village, which provides transitional housing for the homeless, is grateful for the volunteers who participate in Gwinnett Great Days of Service, “because what takes a group of 20-40 volunteers four hours would take four weeks for our crew of two maintenance employees. Plus, we just love the opportunity to meet such wonderful new friends.”

In previous years Gwinnett Great Days of Service volunteers from local businesses, church groups, schools and families have participated in projects that ranged from staffing community events, to painting and repairing buildings, installing playground sets and cleaning up nature trails. Gwinnett Great Days of Service “makes our community a better place for many reasons. When people focus on others’ needs it helps to create a heart of gratitude,” says Mr. Bohanan.

Speaking about the impact and importance of volunteerism, Ms. Ward says, “How do we expect our future leaders to understand what community is, if they have never experienced it?”

Great Days of Service relies on community support and is a fun and worthy cause. Businesses, churches and school can sponsor a team or individuals can participate on their own.

Visit Facebook for more information or register online at http://www.gwinnettgreatdaysofservice.org.
